If you live in North Carolina or anywhere that’s within the “cone of uncertainty” during hurricane season, you know the drill: one minute you’re planning your weekend, and the next you’re glued to the forecast wondering if that swirling blob in the Atlantic is coming for your neighborhood.

While we can’t control the weather, we can organize our homes to be ready for whatever storm season throws at us. Think of it as hurricane prep, but with a touch of order and calm to keep the chaos in check. I don't know about you, but kids seem to develop an unquenchable hunger for snacks during storms. So once your home is organized, don't forget to head out before the storm hits on a snack run!

1. Declutter Before the Storm

Hurricane season isn’t the time for a garage that looks like a yard sale exploded. Clear out unnecessary items now so you’re not tripping over clutter when you need to grab supplies quickly.

Focus on:

  • Entryways & hallways – pathways should be clear for easy evacuation.

  • Garages & sheds – make space for storing outdoor items like grills, planters, and furniture that need to come inside before a storm.

  • Pantry & fridge – toss expired food so you can stock up on non-perishables.

2. Create a Hurricane Supply Station

Designate a waterproof backpack or bin for storm supplies. This way, you’re not scrambling through junk drawers mid-panic.

Include:

  • ALL THE SNACKS

  • Bottled water (If you're on a well, pumps will not work without power)

  • Flashlights, lanterns, and batteries

  • Portable chargers and power banks

  • First-aid kit

  • Prescription Medications

  • Can opener & shelf-stable food

  • Important documents in waterproof bags

  • Cash (because ATMs don’t work without power)

Pro tip: Store this station in an easily accessible spot—preferably in your “safe zone.”

3. Organize Outdoor Prep

A hurricane watch isn’t the time to play hide-and-seek with patio cushions. Keep outdoor essentials organized so you can quickly secure them.

Use:

  • Stackable bins or deck boxes for cushions and small items.

  • Wall hooks or racks for tools and gardening gear.

  • Pre-measured bungee cords & tie-down straps stored in a labeled tote.

4. Designate a Safe Zone

When the winds pick up, you’ll need a secure place in your home to hunker down. Typically, this is an interior room with no windows—think closets, bathrooms, or hallways.

Make it comfortable by:

  • Stocking blankets, pillows, and games/activities for kids.

  • Adding a small storage bin with snacks, water, and emergency items.

  • Keeping a weather radio (battery or crank-powered) nearby.

5. Post-Storm Recovery Organization

Once the storm passes, recovery is smoother when you’re already organized.

Keep a post-storm kit with:

  • Trash bags

  • Gloves and masks

  • Basic tools (hammer, nails, utility knife)

  • Cleaning supplies

Final Thoughts

Preparing for hurricane season isn’t about living in fear—it’s about creating peace of mind. By organizing your spaces now, you’ll not only protect your home but also give yourself a sense of calm when everything outside feels unpredictable.
